Champs Recover, Stay Close To Leaders | |
By Tom Hanson Naples Daily News
The two-time defending champs, Hank Kuehne and Jeff Sluman, struggled a bit Friday morning in the first round of The Franklin Templeton Shootout.
 | | In the last two years, Kuehne and Sluman have shot 11- and 12-under, respectively, in the scramble format. |
|
The dynamic duo started out with two birdies on the first two holes but couldn't build on it. They made the turn at 2-under par, which is losing ground to the field. They finished up at a respectable 6-under, just three shots behind the leaders, Jason Gore and Fred Funk.
But they're not worried.
"We got it back together and we aren't too far behind," Sluman said. "We didn't shoot ourselves out of the tournament."
Last year, Sluman and Kuehne were just one shot behind leaders Justin Leonard and Steve Flesch after the first round. The year before, they had the lead with a 65.
Sluman is hoping the team can stay close to the leaders through the better ball competition today. Kuehne, who basically drove two par-4 greens on Nos. 7 and 10, will need to be a little more accurate off the tee.
"He kind of throttles down a little more (today)," Sluman said. "He won't try to make the big swings that he tries because (today) is about two balls in play and two chances to make birdie."
And there is always Sunday. In the last two years, Kuehne and Sluman have shot 11- and 12-under, respectively, in the scramble format. Sluman feels if they are anywhere near the lead they'll have a shot to three-peat.
"We obviously seemed to gel well on Sundays at this tournament," he said.
