Tuesday News & Notes

NAPLES -- Boomer will be back at The Franklin Templeton Shootout this morning.

ESPN's Chris Berman will tee off at 8:13 a.m. and play in professional Matt Kuchar's group.

Berman also will play Thursday with Graeme McDowell, teeing off at 10:23 a.m.

It will be the sixth straight year Berman, who has a residence on Sanibel Island, has played in the pro-am. Berman usually plays in a handful of tour pro-ams each year.

Yes, it's a shamble

Today's pro-am format is a shamble, not to be confused with the more popular scramble. In a shamble, all players tee off and then pick the best tee shot. Then they all play their own ball from there the remainder of the hole.

In a scramble, every player in the group hits a tee shot, the group picks the best one, then everybody hits from that spot, then they pick the best one, and so on.

Thursday's pro-am format is a best ball, with the lowest score by a single player on the hole counting for the team.

No Gator Bowl for McNeill

Fort Myers' George McNeill, a former Florida State standout, will remember football coach Bobby Bowden favorably, but he won't be in attendance when Bowden coaches his final game in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1 in Jacksonville.

"I was a big fan of his," said McNeill, who will be spending time with his family before leaving for Hawaii for the start of the 2010 schedule. "I always will be. But there comes a time when you've got to say enough's enough."

No Heisman for Colt?

Former University of Texas golfer Justin Leonard was happy the Longhorns survived against Nebraska on a last-second field goal, 13-12, in the Big 12 title game on Saturday night. The Longhorns were picked for the BCS Championship Game against No. 1 Alabama.

But he's not so sure quarterback Colt McCoy's performance will give him the Heisman Trophy this Saturday. McCoy struggled mightily against the Cornhuskers, throwing three interceptions.

"He may have cost himself the Heisman," Leonard said. "I think (Mark Ingram) from Alabama probably deserves it. You know, they've had a great year. It was a little closer last week than I think anybody expected, but they got it done, and they've got some time to get ready (for Alabama)."
