NEWS & NOTES

  • Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele would be the first rookie members of the PGA TOUR to team up for a win and they would also be the first team to win in their first try in this tournament. The team of Curtis Strange and Mark O’Meara teamed up to win in 1989, but it was the inaugural event.
  • Should the team of Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price win the event on Sunday, it would mark the first time two members of the Champions Tour have prevailed in this event. The team of Fred Funk and Kenny Perry were tied after 36 holes last year with Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker at 18-under 126 but eventually finished T5. Fifty-three-year-old Scott Hoch was a member of the Champions Tour when he teamed with Perry to win in 2008 and Raymond Floyd was 51 when he teamed with Steve Elkington in 1993 for the victory.
  • Mark Calcavecchia has been a part of two previous winning teams. He and partner Steve Elkington won in 1995 and he teamed up with Woody Austin to win in 2007.
  • Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price teamed up to win the CVS Charity Classic in 2001.
  • Since the event moved to Naples in 2001, the second-round leaders/co-leaders have won five of those 10 events. They won three straight from 2007-09, but last year the team if Ian Poulter and Dustin Johnson used a final-round 13-under-par 59 to overtake the pair and post the win.
  • Rory Sabbatini and Jhonattan Vegas made the day’s best showing. The pair fired a 12-under-par 60, the pair closed out their round with six consecutive birdies.
  • The format for Sunday’s final round will be a Scramble.
  • The winning team will split $750,000.
  • The overall winners in Saturday’s Franklin Templeton Shootout 5K race were Carolina Barlow (Naples, FL) in the Female Division and Jesse Armbruster (Ashland, OH) in the Male Division. PGA TOUR staffers Jon Brendle and Montana Thompson both completed the race.
  • Sunday’s final-round will be televised on a tape-delayed basis on NBC Sports from 3:00-6:00 p.m.
