The 2009 Shark Shootout field is off to a hot start! Only nine weeks into the PGA TOUR season, 2009 Shootout participants have claimed victory at one-third of the events on the 2010 calendar. At the top of this list is Steve Stricker who rose to his #2 position in the world golf rankings following a victory at the Northern Trust Open. Stricker's solid play has continued all year as he has recorded four top-10 finishes in four starts.
Joining Stricker in the 2010 winner's circle are Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter. Johnson, a Shootout Rookie in 2009 successfully defended his title at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February. The victory was number three in Johnson's young career.
In his first PGA TOUR start of the year, Poulter posted a 4 & 2 victory over fellow Englishman Paul Casey to win the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship. The victory was Ian's first on the PGA TOUR in 103 starts and catapulted him to #5 in the world golf rankings. Poulter also became the first player from England to win a World Golf Championship event.
Though victory hasn't been in the cards so far, 2009 Shootout participants Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and J.B. Holmes are all off to strong starts in 2010. Fowler, a rising star on the PGA TOUR has posted two top-5 finishes in seven events including a second place finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and a fifth place at the Farmers Insurance Open.
The PGA TOUR season has only begun.
