Twelve Teams Announced For The Franklin Templeton Shootout |
|
Final Round is Scheduled for Saturday, December 13
NAPLES, Fla. - Franklin Templeton Shootout host and World Golf Hall of Fame member Greg Norman announced today the 12 two-man teams as the 26th annual Shootout returns for a 14th time to Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, December 8-13, 2014.
The 24-player field features eight of the top 30 players in the world, including FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel. |
The 24-player field features eight of the top 30 players in the world, FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel, six 2014 Ryder Cup participants and eight players earning a total of 13 victories during the 2013-2014 season. There are also five major championship winners and seven international players. As a field, the group has accumulated 115 PGA TOUR career victories.
"There are some diverse and talented teams this year and with the new format, I think we are going to see a close competition throughout," said Norman. "The players are excited about their partners and the fans are in for a real treat."
Last year's champions Harris English and Matt Kuchar will defend their title as the 12 teams battle for a piece of the $3.1 million purse.
English and Kuchar are one of three repeat teams to compete and all are past champions. The others are Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly (2009) and Kenny Perry and Sean O'Hair (2012).
The Franklin Templeton Shootout is the longest-running PGA TOUR-sanctioned post-season event and throughout its history, the tournament has included many of golf's greatest players. The Shootout will once again feature a different format during each of the three competitive rounds. The order of the formats has been modified and will now be: Scramble (Thursday), Modified Alternate Shot (Friday) and Better Ball (Saturday).
This year, Golf Channel will televise Thursday and Friday and FOX will broadcast Saturday's final round which will be live from 1-5 p.m. ET.
Norman will not be competing in the tournament due to his announcing duties with FOX Sports. He will compete in the Tuesday and Wednesday pro-am event, however.

Below is a snapshot of the 12 teams:
Harris English & Matt Kuchar: A year ago, the twosome ran away with the title, shooting a 14-under 58 in the final-round scramble to break the tournament course record. Their seven-stroke margin of victory matched a tournament record set in the 1989 inaugural event. The defending champions will attempt to do something that has not been accomplished since 2004--win back-to-back titles.
Graeme McDowell & Gary Woodland: This team will feature McDowell playing in his fourth Shootout and a first-time appearance by Woodland. These two enjoy practice rounds together throughout the season on TOUR and at home at Lake Nona. McDowell's best finish was second in 2010 with fellow Irishman Darren Clarke. Since McDowell's 2010 U.S. Open victory, this pair has won nine international titles, including four TOUR events.
Keegan Bradley & Camilo Villegas: As individuals this pairing has played a total of five times in the Shootout. But this will be the first time together. Bradley paired with Brendan Steele to win the 2011 tournament. They both live in Jupiter, FL and have a combined seven TOUR career victories. Villegas picked up his fourth win earlier this year.
Billy Horschel & Ian Poulter: Another new team that features a past champion of the Shootout in Poulter, who won in 2010 with Dustin Johnson. Horschel played his in his first Shootout last year and finished fourth with Chris DiMarco. Horschel becomes the second reigning FedEx Cup champion to participate in the Shootout. Brandt Snedeker was the first in 2012.
Jason Day & Cameron Tringale: One of five teams that pairs a U.S. player with an international player. Australia's Day will be making his second appearance in Naples and returns after a three-year absence. Tringale is one of five competing for the first time. Both were born in 1987 and form the youngest team in the field.
Chris Kirk & Brandt Snedeker: This pair of SEC conference (Georgia and Vanderbilt) standouts could be a powerful team to watch. Kirk had his first multiple-win season this year and Snedeker did it in 2012 and 2013. In the last three years, this pair has combined for eight TOUR titles. It is Kirk's first time in the Shootout and Snedeker's second.
Ryan Palmer & Jimmy Walker: This is the only true rookie team in the field and the first since Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele were paired together in 2011, the year they won. Palmer and Walker could join them as the only rookie team to win with a victory this year. Both are from Texas and both have won three times on TOUR, Walker winning three this year.
Jerry Kelly & Steve Stricker: This marks the seventh consecutive year the 2009 champions will play together. Kelly and Stricker are both from Madison, Wisconsin. They have combined for 15 PGA TOUR victories- Kelly three and Stricker notched his 12th title in 2012. Kelly has won two Shootout titles in seven appearances. His first win came in 2006 with Rod Pampling. Stricker is currently ranked 28th in the world. Born in 1966 and 1967, respectively, they are the oldest team in the field.
Sean O'Hair & Kenny Perry: Two years ago, this team's 31-under par total was good enough for victory. Perry became the fifth player to win the Shootout three times and the third player to do it with three different partners. Perry is the all-time Shootout's money leader with over $1.8 million earned in 11 starts.
Retief Goosen & Mike Weir: These two major championship winners will be playing together for the first time in the Shootout but do have Presidents Cup experience together. They were paired together in their initial Presidents Cup appearance in 2000 during day one. The South African and Canadian were on a total of five International teams between that year and 2009.
Charles Howell III & Scott Verplank: Both of these Oklahoma State standouts will join forces for the first time. They both have played in the Shootout six times and have a total of seven career TOUR victories. In 2007 they were on the victorious U.S. Presidents Cup team but were not paired together.
Justin Leonard & Rory Sabbatini: Another team who has Shootout experience but will be paired together for the first time in the event. Both have played six years in Naples. In the past five years both have finished second with different partners.
